Br. Anthony Cavet Selected as Final-Round Judge at 2019 NSDA National Tournament
The head coach of CM’s speech and debate team was nominated for the position by the NSDA District Chair.
West Roxbury, Mass.-- The National Speech & Debate Association (NSDA) selected Br. Anthony Cavet of Catholic Memorial School to serve in the final-round judge pool of the 2019 National Speech & Debate Tournament in Dallas, Texas last month, according to a letter from the NSDA.
Nominated for the position by NSDA District Chair, Br. Cavet, the head coach of CM’s speech and debate team, earned the honor after CM placed second at the State Tournament in May. In 2017 and 2018, he helped CM win back-to-back State Championships.
“I consider selection as a final round adjudicator to be one of the greatest honors that can be bestowed on an individual attending the National Tournament,” wrote Mr. J. Scott Wunn, the Executive Director and National Tournament Director of the NSDA, in a letter to CM.
“Br. Anthony's dedication to speech and debate activities is quite apparent and your support of the activity is greatly appreciated. Thank you for everything that you do to ‘give youth a voice’ through speech and debate education.”
At the National Tournament, Br. Cavet served as a judge in the final round of the “Big Questions” debate. In this contest, students attempted to answer questions that shape “human existence and experience” and concern the intersection of science, philosophy, and religion according to the NSDA.
Eight CM students qualified for the National Tournament and joined Br. Cavet in Dallas. Of those eight students, five finished in the quarterfinals of their respective categories. This included senior Michael McCarthy for Extemporaneous Speaking and senior Will Dashe for Congressional Debate. Will earned an honorary gavel for his role as providing officer in the Congressional Debate event.
Out of the 450-plus participants in the Supplementary Pose category, CM senior Brendan Julian, senior Jacob Azzi, and junior Marcus Gadsden finished in the quarterfinals. They stood among the final 27 participants remaining in the category according to Br. Cavet.
CM’s participation in the tournament caps another strong year for the CM speech and debate team. At the State Tournament in June, the program saw seven of its members win individual State Championships while 18 other members placed in their respective categories.
In addition to the program’s recent success on the national level, 12 students competed in the National Catholic Speech Tournament in Milwaukee this past May.
