Sullivan Earns MVP Honors at Tri-County League Championship Meet
Sullivan led the Knights with wins in the mile and as the anchor in the 4x800.
Boston, Mass — Twice at the Tri-County League Championship at the Reggie Lewis Center, Catholic Memorial long-distance runner C.J. Sullivan ‘23 found himself in second place looking at the back of a St. John’s Prep runner with about a quarter-mile to go. Both times, it was Sullivan who crossed the finish line in victory.
With two wins to his name, including a huge comeback in the relay, Sullivan was one of the main highlights for the Knights and earned the most valuable performance award for the league’s Division 1 meet, which consists of the Catholic Conference teams and Brockton High School. CM, the smallest in the division, finished in fourth place behind St. John’s Prep, Brockton, and Xaverian.
The mile was essentially a two-person race between Sullivan and St. John’s Prep’s Charlie Tuttle, with Tuttle leading for much of the race and Sullivan hanging back waiting to make his move. Sullivan showed off his speed with about 150 meters to go, using his final kick to beat Tuttle to the finish line at 4:22.04 with a margin of victory of .58 seconds.
John Garvey ‘23 finished in fourth with a time of 4:35.97. Both Sullivan and Garvey qualified for the mile at the MIAA Division 2 Championships Meet.
In the 4x800, Prep enjoyed a 40-meter gap when Sullivan grabbed the baton for the anchor leg. The deficit was wiped out with 375 meters remaining as Sullivan raced to a 2:03 split and relay time of 8:46. Will Cummings ‘23 led off with a 2:15, followed by Garvey (2:12) and Joseph Connolly ‘22 (2:16).
The relay win was one of two for the Knights. Led by a strong anchor leg from Datrell Jones ‘23, the 4x200 team took first place with runs from Jaylin Rainford ‘23, Eric Perkins ‘24, and Devon Marshall ‘22. Jones and Perkins also took second and fifth in the 55m dash.
In the 300m, Alexander Cole ‘22 (38.09) finished fifth and the 600m saw Connolly finish sixth at 1:30.23.
The indoor track team returns to action on February 21 at the MIAA Division 2 Championship Meet.
