Knights Repeat as Super Bowl Champions

Foxborough, Mass. — In many ways, the 2022 MIAA Division 2 Super Bowl was like last year’s edition. Both games featured the Catholic Memorial Knights challenging the King Philip Warriors and most importantly, both games ended with the Knights holding the Agganis Trophy in the Gillette Stadium stands, singing the school’s fight song with the school’s supporters section.

Running back Carson Harwood ‘23 ran for 89 yards and scored two touchdowns, running back Datrell Jones '23 ran for 70 yards, and wide receivers Jaedn Skeete ‘23 and Max Tucker ‘23 both caught a score as CM beat the KP 27-7 to repeat as Super Bowl Champions.

The win gives CM their fifth state championship. For Coach John DiBiaso, it’s his 15th State Championship and second with CM.

The evening was a showcase of the present and the future. CM opened things up with an 80-yard drive capped off by Harwood’s first touchdown of the day, a five-yard run that was set up by a 33-yard pass from quarterback J.C. Petrongolo ‘23 to Jones. A two-point conversion run by running back Mekhi Dodd ‘25 gave CM an 8-0 lead early in the first quarter. 

Later in the half, CM used a double quarterback strategy, rotating Petrongolo with Peter Bourque ‘26, which paid off late in the second quarter. Up 8-7 with less than 30 seconds until halftime. Bourque found Tucker for a 22-yard touchdown reception that gave CM a seven-point advantage at the intermission.

The quarterbacks would each throw for an additional touchdown, with Petrongolo finding Harwood on a 20-yard pass late in the third quarter while Bourque connected with Skeete on a 31-yard score early in the fourth to lock up the game for KP.

Petrongolo finished the game with 71 yards passes on three completions and Bourque had 76 yards through the air from four completions.

“Bourque has a lot of poise for a 14-year-old. I'll tell you that and you know we're very fortunate and we got him for three more years, but this was this night was about the seniors, it was their night,” DiBiaso said after the game. “They’re leaving a legacy that’s pretty tough to match because they only lost one game. So they’ve established a nice tradition and legacy.” 

Defensively, Will Claude ‘24 came through with a clutch sack and forced fumble on KP quarterback Tommy McLeish in the third quarter. Claude forced the ball out at the KP 47-yard line and was recovered by Brady McGowan ‘23 at the 40. On the following KP drive, Tucker picked off McLeish at the CM 30, with the following CM drive leading to the touchdown from Petrongolo to Harwood.

CM finishes the year 12-0. They have won 29 straight games, the longest win streak in the state.
