CM Wins 2025 D1 Hockey State Championship

As the game’s final seconds wound down, the Knights edged Saint John’s High School to win their first state title since 2009.

Back in November, on the first day of hockey tryouts, Tommy Hurst ‘25 wasn’t sure he would have a spot on the Catholic Memorial hockey team. A three-time member of the JV team, his chances of getting meaningful playing time, let alone making the team, were not in his favor.

Three and a half months later, Hurst was the hero for the Knights and the reason for the cheers erupting from the CM fan section during Sunday’s MIAA Division 1 State Championship from TD Garden. The senior drained the game-winning goal against Saint John’s High School to give the Knights a 4-3 win over the Pioneer and their 18th state championship.

“It’s an unbelievable and amazing thing to be a part of. These kids worked hard, they came together as a team, they believed in each other, and they believed in the process,” said head coach Larry Rooney P’19. “They checked their egos at the door and when you do that more often than not, the results work towards your favor, and we saw that with this team.”

Hurst’s goal came with only 21.3 seconds left in the third period. Following a wide shot on net by James Baker ‘26, Hurst was in the right place to burying the rebound from the doorstep of the goal and locking up what has been CM’s best run in hockey in years.

The goal was the completion of a third-period comeback that saw the team down 3-2 with only 7:10 left in the game. All game, CM had been peppering Saint John’s goal with shot after shot, but it took a wrist shot from Luke Long ‘25 from the top of the right face-off circle to even the game at 3-3 with about four minutes remaining.

On the other end of the ice, the CM forecheck and defense, led by Baker, Liam McKinney 27, Seamus Tattan ‘25, and Colin Yandle ‘28, held Saint John’s to 25 shots on net, with Jaxson Fleming ‘29 making 22 saves. The eighth grader kept CM in the game by making multiple saves, including a stop on a clear shot from the slot by Saint John’s star Daniel Menyalkin with two minutes to play in the third period.

“It feels awesome,” Long told reporters after the game.  “I’ll say it always, CM’s always been the school to go to, with their history. Feels great to finally get (the school) back here.”

Assists were provided by Baker, Hinckle, Long, Mike Melvin ‘27, Reed, Tattan, and Nick Ware ’28.

CM ends the season with a record of 18-6-1.
